奖牌排名玩花样 美国愤青骂不停
这些天，要是同时在网上看中文媒体和英文媒体的奥运报道，会发现一个有趣的现象。中文媒体，以QQ为例，每次一登录上QQ，对话框右边就会出现一个“赛事金牌榜”的栏目，第一时间更新各个国家的金牌情况。这个栏目从出出现一直到现在，中国都是位居榜首的，截止眼下（8月19日中午12时），金牌排名前三位的，分别是中国、美国和英国，金牌数则分别为39、22、12。
然而，当你浏览美国主流媒体的时候，尽管你也可以在显著位置看到奖牌榜，但排名的结果大相径庭。美国的主要媒体，包括美联社、NBC、YAHOO、纽约时报，全部整齐划一地以总奖牌数为排名依据，自然，美国一直位居榜首。从国家的层面上看，奥运会的一个重要结果就是奖项排名，这个指标是衡量一国体育地位和水平的最主要指针，有时甚至与政治扯上关系，因此，不同的排名方式引起了人们巨大的关注，华尔街日报前些天就注意到了这一问题，并对此进行了专门报道。
随后，纽约时报也对这一问题进行了跟进，记者的报道在网站上贴出来后，美国网民的跟贴无数，各种观点针锋相对，火药味十足。看来在涉及到民族和国家荣誉的问题上，要心平气和，难！

We have to stop obsessing about medals and medal counts. Most of the achievements are done by
individuals anyway, not so much by country.
I love watching the Parade of Nations in the Opening Ceremony, because despite that most of those countries have no chance at medals, they show up anyway. They take their joy in the competition,and being in it, not in the results. If we could just appreciate the joy of sport, maybe we could celebrate when an athlete proudly comes in second (or third, or fifth, or just finishing at all).

You state the reason you use this system of ranking is because that is what AP use. Rueters the other major news agency in the world uses the IOC method.
Of course it will be of no suprise that AP is a US company, Rueters is not……….

Since Olympic‘s modern revival at 1896, the medal table ranks according to gold count. The
weighted scheme makes no sense and American’s abitrarily corruption on this issue is but a
international joke.

I’m a yank living in Europe. Amazing how much USA bashing goes on in the press over here over
this issue (seems that any excuse to bash us is good enough). Why don’t you just put both lists in your ‘at a glance’ listing box? That would go a ways to stop the bashing over here.

The key point is that however the American media chooses to present the Beijing 2008 medal table,everyone else in the world is going to take it as a fact that America lost, and it is non-Americans who determine America’s international reputation.

wish to congratulate the Chinese for their first place in medals rank, to say otherwise is to
exchange at par US 10 dollar bills for US 100s and believe that is nothing wrong. Although, we
sport supporters from around the rest of the world would like to congratulate Mr. Phelps and the whole swiming structure from any single school teacher to university teams for this outstanding did.
We benchmark you and above all we do respect you for your outstanding dids. My heart felt
congratulations on that.
PS Raise the bar and place a fair rank for the respect you deserve for the dids in this game and those achivements from the past.

If the NYT really has no interest in who tops the medal table, that is yet another indication
that Americans just don’t understand how people in the rest of the world think, which is the
fundamental reason why the U.S. is so incompetent as a global leader. Regardless of whether or
not the Olympic medal table deserves to be taken seriously, the fact is that people throughout
the world do so. The Chinese “Communist” Party (which is actually fascist), is getting
excellent value for the $40 billion or whatever it is that it has spent on these games.
The U.S. has a responsibility to show that democracy can outperform authoritarianism, and on this evidence it won’t even try. These Olympics threaten to be a key marker on the planet’s current alarming journey into an era of dominance by authoritarian regimes, ideologies, and instincts, and it isn’t good enough to tell people that they shouldn’t care about the scorecard that they are all using. All over the world, people are going to look up to China after Beijing 2008, as both a sporting and an economic superpower. I believe in democracy passionately, (much more so than most Westerners, who take it for granted), but I have no difficulty understanding why China now looks like a more attractive role model than the U.S. to half the world. From now on, the U.S. will only be able to compete with China for global influence if it starts to understand what it is like not to be an American.

如果这样排名表不是出于NYT自身利益的话，那只能说明，美国人根本不知道世界其它地方的人是怎么看待自己的，这就是美国为什么充当全球领袖总是力不从心的根本原因。不管奥运排名值不值如此重视，事实是，全球各地的人都这么看。

I agree with what Henry said. Just admit you are biased because you are U.S. based and get on
with it. No Chinese are surprised that none of the Chinese medal winners were featured on NYT
front pages for this Olympics. Contrast this with the NYT article about how Phelps wins aren’t as prominently covered in Chinese media due to some ulterior motives of the Chinese government.
Your tortured “formula” reminds me of how some U.S. officials like to talk about “CO2 emission per dollar of GDP” instead of “per capita” when comparing China and US. Very funny. How about “CO2 emission per hamburger consumed”? You guys are the greenest people on earth!
