Chinatakes a bite out of Apple: State media calls iPhone 'threatto national security' over its tracking capabilities
Chinese state media on Friday brandedApple's iPhone a threat to national security because ofthe smartphone's ability to track and time-stamp user locations.
A report by broadcaster CCTV criticized theiPhone's 'Frequent Locations' function for allowing users to be tracked andinformation about them revealed.
'This is extremely sensitive data,' said a researcher interviewed by thebroadcaster.
If the data were accessed, it could revealan entire country's economic situation and 'even state secrets,' the researchersaid.
Apple was not available for immediatecomment.
Apple has frequently come under fire fromChinese state media, which accused the company of providing user data to U.S.intelligence agencies and have called for 'severe punishment'.
It has also been criticized for poorcustomer service.
The California-based company is not the only U.S. firm to suffer from Chinesemedia ire.
Google services have been disrupted in Chinafor over a month, while the central government procurement office has bannednew government computers from using Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system.
Other U.S. hardware firmssuch as Cisco and IBM have experienced a backlash in Chinafrom what analysts and companies have termed the 'Snowden Effect', after U.S.spying revelations released last year by former U.S. National Security Agencycontractor Edward Snowden.

cestrian, chester, United Kingdom, 1 day ago Is there no word in Chinese for irony ? TheChinese State speaking out against tracking andmonitoring, really ?
johnnic,BRACKLEY, United Kingdom, 1 day ago Everybody can be tracked at all times bytheir phones as they need a reception from cell towers to get a signal. Thesetowers then relay information to your network operator so you can beauthenticated and a call can be placed. The ONLY way not to be tracked by yourmobile is to turn it off and never use it again!
JonSims, Ningbo, China, 1 day ago When I take my little 25 foot sailing boataround the Islands of the Zhoushan peninsula, the coast guard sends me a little text message hoping I enjoy my trip. I alwaysreply in English with a big thank you. I think many people believe the bigbrother Chinese machine does not trust it's people, that they all wantrevolution and are living in a sort of prison like existence. Let mereiterate.. I ride my 1100 CC lowrider to the harbour, get on my boat and gosailing and the coastguard tells me to have a nice day. Now.. I think youpeople must be talking about another China. As this one is pretty damngood..

valdor,London, United Kingdom, 15 hours ago I've lived in China and my experience mirrorsthat of Jon. Sure sometimes the government will throw some ridiculous red tapeat you but most of the time you can do pretty much whatever you want. If onlythey would stop blocking half the internet and deal with the pollution...
Steve,Dortmund, 20hours ago The fact that Apple's servers have an opendoor direct to the NSA means any text entered via the touchscreen goes directto their spies.....
ScottyMac, Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 1 day ago I agree with this comments. There are somany niece, ignorant people in Europe and Nth America who have zero understandingof China.I have lived in Asia for 40 years and seen what they have achieved versus the US and Europe, who have gone backwards. Apple is not the only dumb smart phone manufacturer,Sony, LG, they all have these features. China has for many years taken stepsto protect itself from external spies very successfully. Germany is now setting up its own spy agencythis week because of the USlies and deceit.
