Why is India unable to spawn successful technology?

A supportive environment oftechnologists, scientists and, above all, financiers is what Silicon Valley is all about, and that is something thatIndia does not have.

Facebook's$19-billion acquisition of WhatsApp, an apps maker, is the largest-ever sale ofa venture capital-funded company. WhatsApp is an application, which oncedownloaded to a mobile phone, allows users to send free text and images toother WhatsApp users for a year. After that,WhatsApp charges a fee of 99 cents a year. Obviously, there is scope fortremendous network economies, and the app is wildly popular among young peopleeverywhere, especially in Asia. WhatsApp now has over 450 million users.Analysts say this is a defensive move, to keep WhatsApp from falling into thehands of rivals like Google, which has in the past snapped up prized internetproperties like YouTube.WhetherFacebook can make profits from WhatsApp will be determined by its managerialand sales acumen. But we need to ask why India, which boasts of fine technicaland engineering talent, cannot spawn wildly successful technologies like Whats-App,Snapchat and so on.

Though there are many young start-ups working inIndia, most work in isolation, with no concept of a supportive community ofscientists and engineers to test their ideas with. A supportive environment oftechnologists, scientists and, above all, financiers is what Silicon Valley isall about, and that is something that India does not have.To take an ideafrom laboratory to market is a difficult process anywhere and not every goodidea will make it. Edison's success with direct current proved to be wildlysuccessful, but his brilliant contemporary Nicola Tesla's invention ofalternating current did not get contemporary recognition.

In India, the situation is more dismal. There are thickets of red tape in the way ofany entrepreneur.Barriers toentry abound. But the biggest obstacle is the lack of capital. Venture capitalis cautiously feeling its way, but its impact is small. Banks are reluctant tofund businesses without a profitable track record of three years or more. Thisis an impossible condition for any start-up to meet. We need to develop anecosystem of funding start-ups before we see great ideas and applicationscoming to market from small companies.

MANGUESH R.(Panjim, Goa, India)23 Feb, 201407:59 PMIndia's tragedyis that no Big financier or even Corporate with DEEP POCKETS,never ventures toenter with the new idea/product from Laboratory stage. Nor the Government hasvision to back up the technologists with start-up finance. India has never eventhought that we have numerous wonderful inventions to be self-sufficient intechnology oriented products. TIME TO CATCH UP.
