Exclusive: U.S. waived laws to keep F-35 on track with China-made parts
(Reuters) - The Pentagon repeatedly waived laws banning Chinese- built components on U.S. weapons in order to keep the $392 billion Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 fighter program on track in 2012 and 2013, even as U.S. officials were voicing concern about China's espionage and military buildup.
According to Pentagon documents reviewed by Reuters, chief U. S. arms buyer Frank Kendall allowed two F-35 suppliers, Northrop Grumman Corp and Honeywell International Inc, to use Chinese magnets for the new warplane's radar system, landing gears and other hard ware. With out the waivers, both companies could have faced sanctions for violating federal law and the F-35 program could have faced further delays.
"It was a pretty big deal and an unusual situation because there's a prohibition on doing defense work in China, even if it's inadvertent," said Frank Kenlon, who recently retired as a senior Pentagon procurement official and now teaches at American University. "I'd never seen this happen before."
“这真的是一笔大交易，情况很不寻常，因为当局禁用中国产的零件，即使可能是疏忽大意。”最近退休的五角大楼高层采购官、现在在美国大学任教的 Frank Kenlon说。“我之前从没见过这种事发生。”

Pentagon is out of control. Cut their budget by 50%. If they screw up again, cut it by another 50%.

Of course! No thing is allowed to stand in the way of “entitled” corporation profits.
Even tually, the parts may get replaced – may be – but look at what’s at stake; “profits.” Clearly, the end justifies the means.
It’s okay to do what ever it (monetarily) takes to get the F-35 into the (international) market.

Even more shocking and concerning is that Turkey is on the list to receive the F35. Turkey, the outs poken enemy of Israel, also hostile to Greece and many of our Western Allies.
Turkey is not a friend to the U S and should be a huge red flag as far as a potential future adversary.

While it may violate U S laws I don’t see the big issue with using Japanese magnets. Japan is a buyer of the F-35.
I really don’t even see an issue with Chinese ones either except that are a U S adversary

I might remind the readers that U. S. Corporations have never been good patriotic Americans. Their loyalty is to money and stock holders.

The funniest thing is that Americans act so out raged, while 99% of computer parts are manufactured in China… If they weren’t the world economy would collapse…

Japan is better choice for miniaturization, state of the art and build quality of components. A reliable and better partner and than China.

Why not add Iran, Russia and Syria to the list of F-35 customers here?

U. S. waived laws to keep F-35 on track with China- made parts. W o w, with the U S Constitution- hating traitor we have in the White House, does this really come as a shock to any one?

Although I keep hearing that China has a huge military build up, there are no figures to support that idea. The fact is that China has one tenth the military that the U S has presently. China wins over by cheap goods, cheap labor, projects that help develop other nations. The U S spends heavily on the war machine but almost no thing on developing third world nations resources. We just invade them. Enough said.

China is helping U S to develop advanced weapons designed primarily aimed China as target in mind? Unbelievable h!

So now the F-35 project is in red… literally. But who cares, the big bosses got their big bonuses, as always.

I suppose it would be even easier for the Pentagon to buy the existing Chinese version of the F35, it actually flies! L o l

The article focuses almost excluively on the stupid magnets and barely mentions that they are only a tiny part of the foreign sourced parts
Toxic- Avenger suck 1 point 10 hours ago
So if we go to war with China will they still sell us parts for our jets?
Sik h And Destroy 0 points 4 hours ago
Probably, they can't make jet engines for shit right now. They're trying to make indigenous designs, but still using American and Russian power plants for the heavy lifting. No nice way to say it.

It think what the article is trying to tell us is that there are Chinese parts in an advanced aircraft developed in the United States.
The point is that Chinese parts aren't supposed to be in U. S. designed aircraft at all, whether is be 2$ magnets to more expensive pieces.

U. S. waived laws to keep F-35 on track with China- made parts. I now imagine theses to be flying off and China being able to press a button to cause the planes to all stop working.

Must be some terrifying smart magnets that the Chinese invented.

F35 has dropping costs and countries are now getting in line to buy it.

Not that it makes it any better, but this isn't the first time Chinese made parts have leaked into the military's supply system l

at least this time we know about it and they hopefully will be tested to make sure they are up to spec with a domestically produced spare.

I wonder if the pilot- killing oxygen system is a feature on the F-35 air plane too.
