China Launches Lunar Probe In Major Milestone For Its Space Program
BEIJING, Dec 2 (Reuters) - China launched its first ever extraterrestrial landing craft into orbit en route for the moon in the small hours of Monday, in a major milestone for its space programme.
The Chang'e-3 lunar probe, which includes the Yutu or Jade Rabbit buggy, blasted off on board an enhanced Long March-3B carrier rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in China's southwestern Sichuan province at 1:30 a.m. (1730 GMT).
President Xi Jinping has said he wants China to establish itself as a space superpower, and the mission has inspired widespread pride in China's growing technological prowess. State television showed a live broadcast of the rocket lifting off.
北京,12月2日电- - -周一凌晨中国第一次把探测车送入月球轨道,成为其太空计划的一个重要里程碑。
If all goes smoothly, the rover will conduct geological surveys and search for natural resources after the probe touches down on the moon in mid-December as China's first spacecraft to make a soft landing beyond Earth.
In 2007, China launched its first moon orbiter, the Chang'e-1 - named after a lunar goddess - which took images of the surface and analysed the distribution of elements.
The lunar buggy was named the Jade Rabbit in a public vote, a folkloric reference to the goddess's pet.
Chinese scientists have discussed the possibility of sending a human to the moon some time after 2020.
In China's latest manned space mission in June, three astronauts spent 15 days in orbit and docked with an experimental space laboratory, part of Beijing's quest to build a working space station by 2020.
If the lunar mission is successful, China will become the third country, after the United States and the former Soviet Union, to soft-land on the moon.
But it is still far from catching up with the established space superpowers, whose moon landings date back more than four decades.
Beijing insists its space programme is for peaceful purposes, but the U.S. Department of Defense has made clear it wants to prevent China's increasing space capabilities giving it any strategic advantage.

On another note,There will be a take-out on the Moon for the next mission.
Amazing....our Government and corporations have sold the U.S. out and GAVE the Communists Chinese Rocket technology and booster staging technology in the mid 1990's . Our corporations just GAVE Chinese out high technology as to be able just to do business in China. Now we must pour trillions into our military to keep up with another communist superpower....and yet our poor will still not get day care or actual very low cost health care and our middle class is forced to stagnate and loose ground because we have to compete with dollar an hour Chinese and even cheaper India
Sold out....this had to be planned to happen.
If we were launching more space probes than vaginal probes we wouldn't be falling behind the rest of the world but, NOOOOOOOOOOOO...we have to listen to Republicans!
This might be considered good news for us. We significantly slacked off from our space programs with the ultimate disgrace in defunding the space shuttle couple of years ago.
i APPLAUD CHINESE ASTRONASTS ALOT! They are heroes, the only people who willingly entered space rocket that "Made in China"
我赞赏中国宇航员，感激不尽! ! !他们是英雄,是唯一敢进入中国产太空火箭的人。（火箭上标有“中国制造”）
Gee I don't know, our guys flew on ships built by the lowest bidders.
Go right ahead China! America have sent people to the Moon in sixties and seventies, and are now exploring Mars. By the time you are ready to send your first Mars rover, America will have people sent to Pluto.
China keeps progressing forward with new technology. If we here in The U.S., could get back to discipline, wisdom, common sense and respect, I'm positive we could do better than what we're doing right now. We're too diverse and opinionated to get out of our own way. Everything and anyone is wrong and nothing is right. This is how we've become over the past 33 years. Meanwhile all the countries we've been preaching to and teaching are beating us with our own words. China in space is a good thing for that country. We need to stop thinking we're the superior race and just join the human race.
some how i think that probe is going to be for other than peaceful purposes. the last time i was told it was only a probe it was pretty uncomfortable.
I had one of those, yeah, it was a rough.
Russia had to embarrass us with Sputnik to get the country serious about reaching for the moon.
China is not fighting our corporate turf wars to get things done.
If The Inited States loses advantage in space technology & research then we
surely will become a 3rd world has been.
They all come and go.
The US, which has sold out everything of value to China and the rich, will be sending a shuttle to Milwaukee.
"But it is still far from catching up with the established space superpowers, whose moon landings date back more than four decades."
There are no established space superpowers, and if there were, we ain't one of them anymore. The Chinese are going to show us how it's done.
Here we go again; another cold war.
"Beijing insists its space programme is for peaceful purposes, but the U.S. Department of Defense has made clear it wants to prevent China's increasing space capabilities giving it any strategic advantage."
Who needs a lunar probe when you can have a vaginal probe?
For the sake of constructive advancements of humankind, this is encouraging.
While India sends a mission towards Mars. Funny how H-P missed that.
You think we could get the chinese to look around the Apollo 11 landing site, see if we actually landed there? There are a lot of fake moon landing...
Nothing good in the moon. We ve been there.
Watch them find some rare mineral, they will begin exporting it and corner the market with it.
Tell me why, the money spent on such an endeavor, wouldn't be better spent on Science and Technology here on earth dealing with earths problems?
