BEIJING (Reuters) - China grudgingly congratulated Japan on Monday on its successful bid to host the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, after the government had initially refused to offer any praise over the supposedly non-political event.
北京(路透社) - 中国不情愿地祝贺了日本周一成功申办2020年在东京举行奥运会，政府起初拒绝对所谓的非政治性事件给予任何赞美。
Ties between the world's second- and third-largest economies have been shadowed for years by what Beijing says has been Tokyo's refusal to properly atone for wartime atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers in China between 1931 and 1945.
More recently, relations have been troubled by a sovereignty row over tiny, uninhabited islands in the East China Sea known as the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China.
"We have noted the decision by the International Olympic Committee," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a daily news briefing.
Asked specifically whether China had offered congratulations, Hong said such a question should be directed to the Chinese Olympic Committee.
In a statement posted on the ministry's website after the news conference had ended, Hong said that the Chinese Olympic Committee had in fact expressed its congratulations. It did not elaborate.
Hong told reporters that China valued its relations with Japan, but it was up to Japan to stop its provocations over the disputed islands and correctly face its wartime past.
"We have said many times that we pay great attention to relations with Japan," he said. "At the same time we ask Japan to earnestly face up to history and facts."
China hosted a highly successful summer Olympics in Beijing in 2008, and Hong said this was an experience China could share with Japan, as he stuck a slightly more conciliatory note.
"China and Japan are important members of the International Olympic Committee community. We are willing to share the experience of hosting the Olympics with Japan," he added.

Headline is really bisas. What does Foreign Ministry have to do with Olympics ?
[cino] 0 5
one of the main reasons Japan was chosen is their excellent train service and infrastructure.
the usa should pay attention to that. many countries have passed us in those regards. the usa spends so much $$ on wars that we can't "afford" –govt won't spend–on infrastructure. that would some jobs. not enuf, but some and would have beneficial, long term effects economically.

In the US, we just don't really care about this kind of thing because these projects cost money and most tax payers don't use mass transit. It is short sighted on our part, and I'm really tired of hearing discussions that every project needs to show a net profit before they can be started. 在美国，我们只是真的不关心这种事情，因为这些项目需要花费金钱，而大多数纳税人并不使用公共交通。这是我们短视的一部分，我真的不想再听到讨论说，每个项目都需要在启动前说明净盈利。

Or maybe no one wants to deal with another Olympics where athletes are subjects to toxic air.

China still lives in the past. Wars will never end if we think that way. its constant retaliation.

War will happen again if we don't learn from the history. If the Japanese politicians continue to warship the war criminals, what can we expect? If japanese are sincere enough not to start the war again, then they must return the islands they stole from China and Korea....
[Aki-kun] 3 1
Allen, Japanese politicians do not worship the war criminals. They offer prayers at Yasukuni Shrine, a very large temple on whose grounds sit a small portion where soldiers' spirits are interred. In that place, the spirits of the War Criminals are interred without fanfare or placed in a place of honor/reverence. It stretches the imagination that China and Korea can't understand this.

@Aki-kun, if the Japanese interred War Criminals from the past beyond China or the rest of the Asian countries' imagination, what would a public acknowledgement hurt? There is no reason for the current Japanese politicians and the Japanese royals not to admit their past regime had done something terrible. No one really expect the people in today's Japan will likely repeat the horrific things that their soldiers did in WWII. But hiding the facts, as if it didn't happen at all is an act of dishonesty and condoning those evil behavior. Why something happened in the past and its right or wrong can be debated, pretending something didn't happen at all is a straight up lie.
@Peter, got nothing to say to your original one line comment, you are just ignorant.

Abusing women. Always pull that card. It was the 1940's, the US was still segregated. Women had only been voting 20 years. You think a solider from the 1940's, wouldn't rape women they thought of as second class humans. WIthout proper supervision and consequences, i bet it would still happen today. Do you hear Germany constantly complaining about their women being raped by Russians? Many middle-eastern and african countries are currently abusing women, does that stop China from doing business with them? China is just embarrassed about the whole thing, and can't get over it. There is a reason China has disputes with all of her neighbors.

Aki-Kun, You must be a Japanese who refuses to even acknowledge that WWII even happened and your people tried to take over Hawaii. Ops, I think your people did take over Hawaii....there's nothing there except Japanese Tourists. Well, take a good look at me, this will happen again if you guys don't behave: )
[Obviously] 0 3
sorry... i missed where we can tell that it was a grudging congratulation??
[Reality Check] 9 7
The story's writing and political slant is annoying. The one straight piece of truth is that Japan has never even apologized for their atrocities (equal in every way to the Holocaust). For a view of what happened, search THE NANJING MASSACRE. BTW: I've lived and worked in China since 2000.
[Dennis] 3 4
well, japan has apologized, so you're wrong.
[dud] 5 1
When Japan nationalist the disputed island, all apologizes are gone.
[Nhia] 4 9
China should apologize for bullying it's ASEAN members and stop claiming territory 500 miles off its coast as its own.
[Der Kritiker] 2 3
@RealityCheck - maybe you need a reality check after listening to Yang Rui and the Fenqing too much and for so long.
@RealityCheck - 在听了太多太久Yang Rui和愤青的话之后，也许你需要更加真实的核查
[Aki-kun] 0 5
dud, so...you get a group of maybe a hundred diehard nationalists who raise flags, that cancels out decades of Japanese apologies and monetary compensation? What should we do then if China's government says "it is open to peaceful cooperation with Japan" and THOUSANDS of people burn Japanese flags and destroy Japanese businesses?
[Vu] 2 2
Never be enough for the Chinese. What a greedy and a #$%$!!!
[Grey] 2 5
Maybe they should free tibet. Or leave Taiwan alone. Maybe stop invading philippine territory. China can't even acknowledge Tiananmen square ever happened. Yet they want Japan to apologize, over and over again, for a war the happened almost 70 years ago? They are just embarrassed by the whole thing, and can't get over it. Sort of like the kid that gets picked on in school, that becomes a cop, then takes it out on random people the rest of his life.

China is a menace to all of its Asian neighbors (and the US!).

@RealityCheck, you live and work in China but you have no clue regarding Chinese Hans' brutal history and forcing non-Chinese to assimilate into Chinese mainstream society.

Communists are Sore losers. Congratulations japan.
Just curious if Japan has ever officially admitted their crimes at Pearl Harbor and apologized to USA for the killing of Americans. If the Americans want to let bygone be bygone on crimes committed against their countrymen, it's their rights. Other country's rights are their rights; we don't understand their sufferings and should remain neutral.

Willing to share? The only thing China can share is how to stop all factories from polluting the air for a few weeks.
[Peter] 0 0
Simple fact. China Replaced the Japanese. yes we could keep looking back into WWII and keep blaming the Japanese. but every worst characteristics that we saw in Japan in WWII is slowly coming out of the Chinese side. they start stealing islands from MULTIPLE countries surrounding them. once they do invade a country by military force, do you honestly believe they will not abuse human rights, rape, murder, and steal riches from anyone ?

It shows reuters type of old news organization become more and more irrelevant when it comes to reporting on china. Everytime I open anything from them they basically give you a lesson you should just skip them.
