BEIJING: About 30 per cent of the Chinese population cannot speak Mandarin, the official language of China, said the ministry of education on Thursday.

Although the remaining population can communicate in Mandarin, also known as Putonghua, a large number of them do not speak it well, reports Xinhua.

Ministry spokesperson Xu Mei said the country still needed to invest in promoting Mandarin.

The government has been holding a campaign to promote Mandarin in the third week of September every year since 1998.

This year, the ministry would focus on the remote countryside and areas inhabited by ethnic minorities, Xu said.

What do these 30 % speak ? Arabic ?

So mandaring is being violantly and non voluntarily thrust in the mouth of other races in china!

Agree (2)Disagree (0)Recommend (1)

bonkim2003 (Blaisdon)

What is the surprise - comparing to India which is a smaller country geographically, it is like saying 30% of Indians vannot speak Hindi - many more in India cannot speak Hindi fluently than Mandarin in China.

Agree (1)Disagree (0)Recommend (1)

colinyujotang (Toronto)

The other 30% should consist of other dialects like Cantonese, Tibetan, Mongolian, Manchurian, various languages of the Xinjiang region. What's the big deal if 30% of the population can't speak Mandarin, if over 90% of the population is literate and can read and or write the common Chinese language that binds the country.

Agree (2)Disagree (0)Recommend (1)

A (Kolkata)

Wu, Yue, Min

Aryabhata (Location)

This is pathetic considering CCP's hard nosed attitude on pushing "Simplified" chinese, Beijing Mandrin down people's throat.

Pacific Rim (Ladakh,China)

my native language is wu...i can speak mandarin but I dont understand some less frequently used words and sentences..there are many dialects in china. so,you have to speak mandarin so that everyone can understand u.

Agree (1)Disagree (0)Recommend (0)

ash (Location)

how many indians cant speak hindi ? india's national language . china is no diffrent
