Boum: Zizou said sorry
Jean-Alain Boumsong has told Sky Sports News that Zinedine Zidane apologised to his France team-mates for being sent off in the World Cup final.
The retiring superstar brought shame on his nation when sent off in extra time of the penalty shoot-out defeat to Italy, having felled Marco Materazzi with a headbutt.
The veteran was forced to remain in the dressing room and reflect on his actions while his team-mates were beaten on penalties.
The French players were understandably down and Newcastle defender Boumsong has revealed Zidane attempted to appease them by apologising.
When asked to comment whether Zidane had apologised, Boumsong said: "Yes, yes of course.
"He is very disappointed to have made that fault."
France finished the stronger of the two sides in Berlin and Boumsong claims they did all they could to win the World Cup for a second time.
"We had a good run, but unfortunately we have lost the most important game," he told Sky Sports News. "We have done well and did our best to win the game."
